Children in Key Stage 2 are taking part in an eggstreme maths competition, on Mangahigh, over a 10 day period. Children have the 10 days to achieve 100 new points to win themselves an Easter egg supplied by Mangahigh. The school could also receive an Easter egg hamper if they finish 1st or a Creme Egg hamper if they finish between 2nd and 10th place on the 24th March. Currently, children are working very hard and have taken the school into the top ten across the country. We will try and keep you updated on their progress.

This week is Active Travel Week and we're taking part in Sustrans Big Shift challenge. Please walk, cycle or scoot to school with your children. If you usually drive then you can park further away from school and walk the remaining distance. The more people that actively travel, the more chance we have of retaining our title and winning some great prizes!

On Monday 14th March, all Year 4 children participated in a handball festival as part of Sports Relief Week. It was great to see the children including each other in their teams and having to think about their decisions. The children displayed fantastic sportsmanship and had lots of fun!
Samuel said: "I found refereeing fun because you get to see how people improve and play fairly."
Ella: "I liked that everybody in my team weren't fussing over the scores and showed great sportsmanship."
Rio: "I thought I did really well in goal because I saved lots of shots."
Maddie: "I really enjoyed it because the referees were fair and I thought I improved my defending skills."

On Wednesday 9th March, 12 children from Exminster School took part in a gymnastics competition at South Dartmoor Community College.
There were 6 children in a Year 3/4 team and 6 children in a Year 5/6 team.
The children had to perform a floor routine and a vault exercise, which they had been practising and learning over the last few weeks.
They all performed extremely well and should be extremely proud of their performances.
Both teams won their categories and were absolutely delighted with the result.
They have cartwheeled themselves into the regional finals to be held on Wednesday 16th March at Newton Abbot Gymnastics Club.

This week for our art collaboration project we created a rainbow using over 2000 lolly sticks. Firstly we painted them using different tones and shades. We then glued them onto a canvas and built them up as layers to create a 3D effect. Every member of Year 6 contributed and we all had a lot of fun. We hope to display it around school.

This week Year 2 have been learning to use marbling inks. We have created beautiful marbled papers in warm and cool colours that we will use as the background for a castle and dragon themed picture. We have been inspired by the work of illustrator Jan Pienkowski. The children were very thoughtful and expressive in their responses to Jan's stunning artwork. We look forward to finishing our works of art later this week.

What a fantastic day we have had in year 5! We were lucky enough to have a visit by Bridget Arnold who is a DAISI artist (Daisi Arts in Schools Initiative) Bridget is a silk painter who creates banners and flags. She showed us how to use a material called Gutta to draw onto stretched silk and then use brightly coloured inks to colour in. Bridget also showed us how you can sprinkle salt onto the wet paint to create different effects. We use the theme of fish from our Diversity project as our inspiration. The finished banners will be on display at the KS2 Art Exhibition on Friday- so please come and have a look at our work.

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring term where we start with a week of mathematical problem solving! Throughout this week the children will be taking part in maths problem solving within their classes. Some year groups will also be setting problem solving home learning this week.
Alongside this we are keen to share with you a range of maths games that you can play at home with your children. Each day we will be publishing a new game for KS1 and KS2 on the school website in the 'Marvellous Maths' section under 'Parents'. Maths games are a great opportunity for families to spend time together having fun while practising their basic number skills.

In Y6 our Home Learning involved us choosing an activity based on Diversity. Some examples were in RE – How we make moral choices, in art – painting and drawing and the diversity we see in people’s faces and in geography – how the coastline around Dawlish Warren has changed over the years.
“I created a piece on Van Gogh, I looked carefully at his style and painted my own picture. We had the half term to complete it, which allowed me to produce a high quality piece,” said Keani.
“I enjoyed it because it gave me a chance to be creative,” said Imogin.
The projects were diverse and created to a high standard. It was lovely to see so many parents on Tuesday when the children presented their work to one another.

We would encourage all parents and carers to visit The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre at www.ceop.police.uk who are an organisation that work across the UK tackling child sex abuse and providing advice for parents, young people and professionals.
Their website is packed with advice, help or the facility to report activity for parents and children from 5 to 17 years old. Keeping our children safe on the internet is extremely important and through their work using cartoons, activities and providing advice together we can all make a difference.

Pan Fried Chicken in a Tomato Pesto Sauce Served with Steamed Pasta and Wilted Greens
INGREDIENTS
Diced Chicken Fillet – 360g
Chunky Diced Fresh Tomatoes – 2
Fresh Basil – 10 leaves
Finely Chopped Fresh Garlic – 2 cloves
Fine Diced Spanish Onions – 1 large
Vegetable Oil – 50ml
Black Pepper – 2 pinches
Frozen Garden Peas – 80g
Pre Cooked Pasta Shells – 200g
Chopped Tomatoes Tinned – 400g
Fresh Spinach Leaves – 240g
Sliced Spring Onions – 60g
Sour Cream – 50 ml
Method
1. Heat half the oil in a wok or saucepan, add the chicken and pan fry until golden brown and cooked thoroughly.
2. In a separate wok or small saucepan heat the remainder of the oil and lightly cook the garlic being careful not to brown it, add the onions until they go soft, add the fresh chopped tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes, add the chopped tinned tomatoes and bring to a simmer, add the fresh basil leaves and turn off the heat.
3. Place the spinach, peas and spring onion into a steamer for 5 minutes until the spinach turns dark green and wilted in appearance also place the cooked pasta into a separate tear of the steamer or cover in boiling water to heat.
4. Add the cooked chicken to the sauce and stir until thoroughly combined.
5. Place the hot pasta onto a warm plate, place the chicken and sauce onto the pasta and serve the wilted greens on the side. Spoon lightly the sour cream over your dish

Cheese and Chive Salmon Cakes with Steamed Citrus Scented Rice Served with Oriental Stir Fry Vegetables
INGREDIENTS
Fresh Salmon Diced – 400g
Parmesan Cheese – 2tbls
Fresh Ginger Finely grated – 15g
Whole Egg – 1
Spring Onions sliced thinly – 125g
Fresh White Breadcrumbs – 100g
Vegetable Oil – 50ml
Long Grain Rice cooked – 200g
Fresh Lemon cut in half – 1
Light Soy Sauce – 75 ml
Red Pepper thinly sliced – 1
Green Beans or Broccoli – 100g
Method
1. Place the salmon into a steamer or oven at 180c for 8 minutes or until thoroughly cooked
2. Place the cooked rice and squeeze the lemon onto the rice and steam for 10 minutes until piping hot
3. When the salmon is cooked place carefully into a food processor with the egg, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and the green part of the spring onion, blend until thoroughly mixed, divide into 4 and pan fry each side in a frying pan with half the oil until golden brown
4. In a wok or saucepan pour the remainder of the oil and heat, add the ginger stir gently being careful not to burn, add the red pepper remainder of the spring onion and green beans or broccoli and stir fry for 2 minutes add the light soy sauce and stir.
5. Place the hot rice into a small teacup or ramekin and turn out onto a plate just on the side, place the fish cake on the plate with the stirfry.

Many thanks to our Parent Forum who have spent time reviewing our Anti-bullying policy. This week we have had a focus on Anti-bullying especially on Rainbow day. All children in school have named a school adult that they feel comfortable talking to if there is anything bothering them. At the end of Rainbow Day, all children went home with a leaflet about our Anti-bullying policy in school. Have a look below at what has been going on during Rainbow day:

Reception Children have been listening to stories about friendships and superheroes (Supertato) and talking about the issues that characters experienced. They have made their own superhero potato whose mission is to help others. They are learning a song about friendship and doing activities, encouraging new friendships. In the afternoon session, children are mixed with Years 1 and 2 to make a new friendship and learn some new names. |

Year 1/2 Children were involved in an e-safety session, talking about when to use computers, where they use computers and what they do on them. The emphasis is on being supervised and adults checking what they are doing if they are online. They were also looking at friendships, what makes a good friend and writing notes to their friends, sharing and how to solve problems if sharing is not happening. Diversity was also an activity – celebrating how we are all diverse and how we embrace this. |

Year 3/4 Children were involved with an e-safety session, safe use of usernames and passwords. They were reading through sample blogs and talking about what is safe or unsafe about those and practising writing their own blogs. They were also role playing and creating freeze frames of bullying scenarios and changing these scenarios using problem solving. They were writing poetry and creating a dance based on these situations, talking about friendships and making friendship bracelets. |

Year 5/6 One session was a focus on Childline and bullying, how to seek help and an art activity around this. Another session focused on e-safety where children were learning about staying safe online and created a presentation for Years 3 and 4 about how to stay safe online. One session was being led by a group of Year 6 children with a focus on trust, confidence and team work. The children planned the session themselves and were leading games around these themes. |

During Rainbow Day the children in KS2 have been discussing how to keep safe online. They used 'Google Classroom' to answer some of the questions below. The children in Year 5/6 had to create a presentation in either 'Google Docs' or 'Google Slides' outlining how younger children could keep safe on the Internet. In Years 3/4 they had to write their own blog by looking at examples of what would be safe to publish on the Internet.

This week Year 6 have been involved in bikeability sessions. For level 1, the children had to ride their bikes with excellent control and prepare themselves for the road. For level 2, the children had to cycle on single-lane roads and use junctions.
All of the children did exceptionally well and were a credit to our school out in the community.

On the 18th of September, 9 nine children from a mix of yr5/yr6 went to compete at a junior rugby world cup tournament. we competed as Georgia. There were four pools with Exminster/Georgia competing in Pool C with rivals, Kenn who were competing as national team Tonga.We won are first game against Tonga 6-3 and after that a 7-4 victory against Argentina. After losing 5-1 at half-time, we managed to pull back and scored another 4 tries. Unfortunatley, New Zealand scored another try to take the win 6-5. Fortunatley we got into the quarter finals where we played France. Unfortunately, France managed to knock us out after a 8-6 victory. Although France were challenging opponents, they were defeated in the semi-finals by Fiji who managed to finish 2nd overall. When we were knocked out were told to sit in the family stand to watch: Fiji V Australia in the final of the tournament. Finishing 5th out of 20, team Exminster were delighted as we had a good team spirit. Players scoring up to 23 tries we also had some good individuals varying throughout the competition. We started playing on the astro-pitches for the Pool matches then, because we were through to the quarter-finals, we played on the first team pitch, where the Exeter Chiefs play their matches.

For the first time Exminster has taken part in the Annual Exeter Maths Challenge. Entering two teams, they did the school proud getting through from the original 36 teams into a final of 10.
Exminster were the only school to get both teams through to the final.
On Tuesday both teams took part in the well fought final with one team finishing in second and the other team finishing in forth, a great achievement.
A huge congratulations to both teams!

Singers from three primary schools within the Dawlish Learning Partnership were thrilled to perform at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 6th June.
The schools were invited as part of a Chorister Outreach Project by the Cathedral to reach out the children in the county and diocese to give them special and exciting singing experience within the majestic surroundings of Exeter Cathedral
Stephen Tanner, Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral School and Associate Musical Director Andrew Downton, visited Exminster School, Starcross School and Gatehouse ACE Academy for a number of workshops to teach the children the performance pieces, with the final workshop supported by Choristers from the Cathedral School.
Children from Exminster sang 'Sing' by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Starcross sang the traditional song, "Somewhere there's a forest" and Gatehouse children performed "We are the young" by Mary Donnelly. The children also sang three further songs together with all the other schools who were also taking part in the concert.
It was a wonderful afternoon and a fantastic experience for all our children.
We are immensely proud of our children's outstanding performance and exemplary behaviour throughout the rehearsals and performance. Thank you to Mr Wilsher, Miss Vanstone, Mrs Parsonage and all the children involved.

On Thursday 4th June, Digital Leaders from across the Dawlish Learning Partnership joined together at Dawlish Community College to showcase the exciting technological projects they have been working on back in their schools.
Children from Exminster, Kenton, Cockwood, and Westcliff Primary Schools along with students from Dawlish Community College took part. The evening began with a talk from guest speaker, Jacob Tomlinson who is the Senior System Administrator at the Met Office in Exeter. An ex student of DCC, Jacob explained how computing impacts on everything we do in life, including forecasting the weather.
Year 7 Digital Leaders from DCC then gave a presentation on some of the projects they have been involved in since joining the school, including Adobe Photoshop, then two Year 10 students gave an overview of the Computer Studies GCSE.
The floor then opened to the primary schools who were able to showcase their work to all the parents who attended the evening.

Jacob Tomlinson was given the very difficult task of choosing a school to present a prize to. All the schools were highly commended, but Westcliff's Digital Leaders were chosen to be awarded a Raspberry Pi, a small computer that can be used to learn programming through fun, practical projects, due to their passionate presentation style.
All the Digital Leaders who attended the event were presented with a certificate and a fun and informative evening was had by all.

The children in Year 6 have had a challenging week doing their SATs tests. Each day has seen them tackle another tricky test! They have risen to the challenge really well- taking everything in their stride and working with a real determination to do their very best. (The biscuits and juice at the end of each test seem to have really helped!)

In Literacy this week in Year 4 we have been having a focus on the contrast between living in the country and then the city. We went on a walk around school to experience nature and then when we came into the classroom and listened to lots of very loud city noises. We wrote some powerful description based on our senses. Below is a photo of Rianna's, we wish we could take photos of all of them because we are all very proud of our work.
